The idea for a bilingual institution was conceived by a group of bilingual, international parents from Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte and Pankow, who identified the need for affordable German-English alternatives for the growing international population in the eastern part of the city. The parents group founded the Berlin Kids international e.V. (an association) and a preschool/kindergarten in 1999. The governance of the preschool/kindergarten has since transferred to the Pfefferwerk Stadkultur gGmbH and is independent of the primary school. In 2007, the Berlin Kids International e.V. joined with the Pfefferwerk Stadkultur gGmbH to open a German-English primary school based on the principles of mixed-age teaching, with an emphasis on individual learning and project work.
The school currently educates bilingual children in grades 1-6. The opening of a secondary school, beginning with grade 7, is planned for August 2012.
